At this point, Carly and Nina may hate each other, but Port Charles keeps handing them the same dating pool. And after looking back at their history, I can’t help wondering whether General Hospital is quietly setting up man number five.
One of the funniest and strangest patterns on GH is how often Carly and Nina end up involved with the exact same men. They’re constantly fighting, competing, exposing each other’s secrets, and making each other’s lives miserable, yet when it comes to romance, their paths somehow keep crossing.
It started with Franco. Long before he became one of Port Charles’ most complicated redemption stories, both women found themselves drawn to him. Nina bonded with Franco during one of the darkest periods of her life, while Carly fell for him when many believed he was Jason’s long-lost twin. Neither relationship lasted, but it was the first sign that these two rivals had more in common than they wanted to admit.
Then came Jax. Carly and Jax built a marriage, had a daughter together, and spent years trying to make their relationship work despite Sonny’s constant presence in their lives. Years later, after returning to Port Charles, Jax found himself falling for Nina as she struggled through yet another emotional chapter. Once again, both women ended up sharing the same romantic history.
Of course, the biggest overlap was Sonny.
For years, Carly and Sonny were considered one of General Hospital’s signature couples, surviving countless betrayals, separations, and reunions. Then came Nixon Falls. When Sonny lost his memory and became “Mike,” Nina fell in love with a completely different version of the man Carly thought she had lost forever. The fallout from that storyline is still fueling conflict between the two women today, making Sonny arguably the most controversial man they have ever shared.
Most recently, Valentin joined the list. Nina once loved Valentin deeply, married him, and stood by his side through some of his biggest battles. Now, after Carly’s growing connection with the fugitive spy, history appears to be repeating itself once again. What started as Carly helping Valentin hide from danger has evolved into something much more personal, adding another familiar name to the Carly-Nina overlap chart.
Which brings me to the real question.
Is the show finished with this running theme, or are the writers setting up another collision course?
General Hospital has made this coincidence happen four separate times, which feels like far more than an accident. At some point, it becomes part of the relationship dynamic between Carly and Nina. No matter how much they claim to despise each other, they keep being drawn toward the same men, creating another layer of rivalry that never fully disappears.
And if Valentin doesn’t last, who could be next? Could an unexpected newcomer end up caught between them? Could an old flame return and reignite another battle? Or has GH already planted clues for the next man destined to join one of Port Charles’ strangest romantic traditions?
What do you think? Is sharing four romantic interests just a bizarre coincidence, or are the writers intentionally keeping Carly and Nina on parallel tracks? And if there is a fifth man coming, who would be the most shocking choice?
